Hemmiken is a municipality in the Bezirk Sissach of the canton of Basel-Landschaft. Situated at an altitude of 490 meters above sea level, it covers a total area of 339 hectares. The key features of the municipality are summarized in Table 2, and its location can be seen in Figure 1.

Hemmiken's history is documented back to 1255, when it was first mentioned as Enninchon. In the late Middle Ages, it was part of the Thierstein-Farnsburg lordship before coming under the control of the city of Basel in 1461. Its location near the Austrian-controlled Fricktal made it vulnerable to pillaging during the Swabian War and the Thirty Years' War. Remnants of a once-prosperous stone quarrying industry from the 18th and 19th centuries are still visible on older houses in the form of ornate door supports. As of 2025, Hemmiken has a population of 264 residents. The population is predominantly Swiss, with only 7.17 percent, or 19 people, holding foreign nationality, giving it the lowest proportion of foreigners in the canton. The age structure shows 42 children (0-17 years), 148 people of working age (18-65), and 74 older adults (over 65). The gender distribution is nearly balanced, with 134 women and 130 men. In terms of total population, Hemmiken ranks 82nd out of the 86 municipalities in Basel-Landschaft. The population development by age group since 2005 is detailed in Table 2.

The land use in Hemmiken is predominantly agricultural, with 69.2 percent of its 339-hectare surface dedicated to farming. Forest covers 25.2 percent of the area, while the settlement area makes up 5.6 percent.

The municipality's tax revenue ranks 82nd in the canton. The municipal tax multiplier and its corresponding rank among the 86 municipalities are detailed in the full dataset. Tax revenue per adult capita and its rank are also available for comparison.

In 2022, the total energy consumption in Hemmiken was led by heating oil at 1,142 MWh, followed by electricity at 1,032 MWh. Other significant sources included wood at 677 MWh, ambient heat at 416 MWh, photovoltaics at 103 MWh, and thermal solar energy at 29 MWh. Electricity consumption per capita was 3.8 MWh, placing Hemmiken at rank 39 among all municipalities in the canton. This middle ranking suggests a typical level of consumption, not driven by significant industrial activity which can cause very high per capita use. The vehicle stock in Hemmiken in 2026 consisted of 162 passenger cars and delivery vans. Of these, 152 were powered by combustion engines, primarily petrol or diesel, while 10 were electric vehicles. This results in an electric vehicle share of 6.2 percent in the local fleet. The detailed breakdown is provided in Table 3.

In 2024, Hemmiken demonstrated strong recycling performance in specific categories. Residents recycled 8 kg per capita of other metals, ranking the municipality 11th in the canton, and 3 kg per capita of tinplate and aluminum, achieving the top rank of 1st. For glass, the rate was 28 kg per capita (rank 24), for green waste 104 kg per capita (rank 36), for household and bulky waste 147 kg per capita (rank 25), and for paper and cardboard 30 kg per capita (rank 42). No waste oils were recorded. With two categories ranked in the top 11, Hemmiken is among the leading municipalities in recycling performance.
