Läufelfingen is a municipality in the Bezirk Sissach, situated in the Homburg Valley near the Lower Hauenstein Pass. At an altitude of 569 meters above sea level, it ranks 12th highest among the 86 municipalities in the canton. The community covers a total surface area of 816 hectares, placing it 20th in size within Basel-Landschaft. The history of Läufelfingen dates back to at least 1226, with evidence suggesting even older Alamannic settlements from the 7th century. Archaeological finds, including remnants of a medieval cemetery and Roman artifacts, indicate that a church and village were established around the 8th century, likely on the site of a former Roman estate. As of 2025, Läufelfingen has a population of 1,428, ranking it 43rd in the canton. The population consists of 15.3 percent foreigners, which places it 51st in that category. The age distribution shows 216 children (0-17 years), 899 people of working age (18-65), and 313 older adults (over 65). The gender ratio is nearly balanced, with 740 men and 688 women. The land use in Läufelfingen is characterized by a significant proportion of agricultural and forested areas. Of its 816-hectare total surface, 10.1 percent is settlement area, 48.6 percent is agricultural land, and 41.3 percent is forest.

The energy consumption profile for 2022 shows that heating oil was the largest energy carrier at 7,858 MWh, followed by electricity at 7,228 MWh. For electricity consumption, a common benchmark, Läufelfingen has a per capita consumption of 5.2 MWh, ranking it 13th lowest in the canton. Waste recycling data from 2024 shows strong performance in several categories. The municipality recycled 35 kg of glass per capita, ranking 8th in the canton, and 166 kg per capita of household refuse and bulky waste, also ranking 8th. It ranked 10th for paper and cardboard at 50 kg per capita. Notably, it achieved the top rank for tinplate and aluminum recycling at 3 kg per capita and ranked 3rd for other metals at 22 kg per capita.
