Ormalingen is a municipality in the Bezirk Sissach, situated in the Ergolztal valley at an altitude of 424 meters above sea level. It covers a total surface area of 693 hectares, making it the 33rd largest municipality in the canton by area. The history of Ormalingen is marked by early settlement, with archaeological finds including a Roman villa and significant early medieval graves. The first recorded mention dates to 1286 as Normandingen, a name derived from the Old High German personal name Nordeman. As of 2025, Ormalingen has a population of 2,451, ranking it 29th in the canton. The population consists of 84% Swiss citizens and 14% foreigners. The age distribution shows 19% are young (0-17 years), 59% are of working age (18-65), and 22% are older adults (over 65). The gender ratio is nearly balanced, with 1,241 women and 1,210 men. Land use in Ormalingen is predominantly agricultural, with 50% of its 693-hectare area dedicated to farming. Forests cover 38% of the land, while settlement areas account for 12%. A minimal 0.1% is classified as unproductive surface.

The municipality's tax revenue ranks 27th in the canton. The tax revenue per adult capita and the municipal tax multiplier, along with their respective ranks among the 86 municipalities, are detailed in the accompanying financial tables.

In 2022, the municipality's energy consumption was led by wood at 12,525 MWh, followed by heating oil at 9,654 MWh and electricity at 5,295 MWh. Renewable sources like biogas, photovoltaics, and ambient heat also contributed significantly. For electricity consumption, a comparable energy carrier used across all communities, Ormalingen ranks 82nd in per capita consumption at 2.2 MWh per person. This places it among the bottom 10 municipalities in the canton for electricity use per capita, a position that can often be attributed to lower levels of industrial activity.

The vehicle stock in Ormalingen, as of 2026, consists of 1,523 passenger cars and delivery vans. Of these, 1,273 are powered by combustion engines, while 250 are electric vehicles, representing an electric vehicle share of 16%. The detailed breakdown is provided in Table 3.

In 2024, Ormalingen demonstrated strong performance in waste recycling. The municipality recycled 31 kg of glass per capita (rank 13), 4 kg of plastics per capita (rank 7), 1 kg of oils per capita (rank 6), 72 kg of paper and cardboard per capita (rank 4), and 3 kg of tinplate and aluminum per capita (rank 1). With several categories ranked in the top 10, Ormalingen is among the leading municipalities in the canton for recycling.
