Nestled in the Bezirk Sissach, the municipality of Tecknau sits at an elevation of 439 meters above sea level. With a total surface area of 234 hectares, it is a community of modest geographical size, ranking 72nd in the canton for its area. The key features of the municipality are summarized in Table 2, and its location can be seen in Figure 1.

Tecknau has a long history of habitation, with evidence dating back to cave bears. It was first documented in 1296 and was part of various local jurisdictions during the Middle Ages before coming under Basel's control in 1461. Following the 1798 Revolution, it was assigned to the Gelterkinden district and later to Sissach. The village gained recognition as a tunneling community during the construction of the Hauenstein-Basistunnel from 1912 to 1916. More details are available on its Wikipedia page.

As of 2025, Tecknau has a population of 831 residents, ranking it 55th in the canton. The population consists of 33.7% foreigners, which is the fourth-highest proportion among all municipalities in Basel-Landschaft. The age distribution shows 133 young people (0-17 years), 538 individuals of working age (18-65), and 160 older adults (over 65). The gender ratio is nearly balanced, with 417 men and 414 women. Land use in Tecknau is predominantly forested, with woods covering 58.0% of its total surface. Agricultural areas account for 23.9%, while settlement areas make up 16.8%. The remaining 1.3% is classified as unproductive surface.

In terms of municipal finances, Tecknau's tax revenue ranks 59th in the canton. The specific tax multiplier and its corresponding rank among the 86 municipalities are detailed in Table 2.

The energy consumption profile for 2022 shows heating oil as the primary energy source at 4,500.61 MWh, followed by electricity at 1,715.0 MWh. Other significant sources include environmental heat, wood, photovoltaics, and thermal solar energy. Electricity consumption per capita is 2.1 MWh, ranking Tecknau 84th in the canton, placing it in the bottom ten. This very low per capita consumption can often indicate a lack of major industrial activity within the municipality.

The local vehicle stock in 2026 consists of 470 passenger cars and delivery vans. Of these, 386 run on petrol or diesel, while 84 are electric vehicles, resulting in an electric vehicle share of 17.9%. This data is presented in Table 3.

In 2024, Tecknau demonstrated a strong commitment to recycling, particularly for plastics. The municipality recycled 3 kg of plastics per capita, ranking 11th in the canton, and 2 kg of tinplate and aluminum per capita, ranking 16th. With two categories in the top 20, Tecknau performs well in recycling. For green waste, the per capita amount was 125 kg, ranking 25th. Other categories, such as glass, paper, and household waste, have rankings in the middle of the canton-wide comparison. The total recycled amounts and detailed comparisons are shown in Table 4.
