Tenniken is a municipality in the Bezirk Sissach of the canton of Basel-Landschaft. Situated at an altitude of 431 meters above sea level, it covers a total surface area of 467 hectares. The key features of the municipality are summarized in Table 2, and its location can be seen in Figure 1.

The history of Tenniken dates back to its first mention in 1226 as "Tenninchon." In the early 15th century, ownership of the area was contested between Basel and Solothurn, but it came under Basel's control in 1482. After being part of the Waldenburg district from 1798, it became part of the Sissach district following the cantonal separation. The municipality has had an official coat of arms since 1944, featuring a gothic "T" on a gold background and three black diagonal stripes on a silver background, reflecting historical ties to the former lordship of Eschenz. As of 2025, Tenniken has a population of 937 residents. Of these, 813 are Swiss citizens and 134 are foreigners, making the foreign population proportion 14.15 percent. The age distribution shows 162 young people aged 0-17, 536 of working age between 18 and 65, and 239 older adults over 65. The gender ratio is nearly balanced, with 470 women and 467 men. In terms of population size, Tenniken ranks 52nd among the 86 municipalities in the canton. The population development by age groups since 2005 is detailed in Table 2.

The land use in Tenniken is characterized by a total surface of 467 hectares. Settlement area accounts for 11.5 percent of this, agricultural land use covers 48.0 percent, and forest makes up 40.5 percent.

In terms of municipal finances, Tenniken's tax revenue ranks 47th in the canton. The municipal tax multiplier and its corresponding rank among the 86 municipalities are detailed in the accompanying tables.

Energy consumption in Tenniken for 2022 shows electricity as the dominant energy carrier at 9,893.02 MWh, followed by heating oil at 4,021.52 MWh, wood at 3,497.03 MWh, environmental heat at 1,505.02 MWh, photovoltaics at 692.84 MWh, and thermal solar energy at 101.88 MWh. Electricity consumption per capita is 10.8 MWh, ranking Tenniken 4th highest in the canton. This places it in the top 10 municipalities for per capita electricity use, a position that can often be influenced by industrial activity.

The vehicle stock in Tenniken as of 2026 consists of 628 passenger cars and delivery vans. Of these, 531 are powered by combustion engines, primarily petrol or diesel, and 97 are electric vehicles. Waste recycling data for 2024 shows that Tenniken recycles significant amounts across several categories. For glass, 27 kg per capita is recycled, ranking the municipality 27th in the canton. Green waste recycling is 110 kg per capita, ranking 33rd. Residual and bulky waste amounts to 80 kg per capita, ranking 83rd. Recycled oils total 1 kg per capita, achieving a high rank of 6th. Paper and cardboard recycling is 40 kg per capita, ranking 24th. Other metals recycling is 12 kg per capita, ranking 10th, and tinplate and aluminum recycling is 2 kg per capita, ranking 16th.
