The village was founded by the Alemanni in the 8th century and was first mentioned in 1189 as Bendewilere when it was gifted to the Benedictine monastery of Schöntal by Count Hermann II of Frohburg. After the monastery was dissolved in 1528, the village came under the control of Basel. In 1617, a fire destroyed the church and several buildings, which were subsequently rebuilt, and the village's coat of arms reflects its historical ties to the Schöntal monastery.
