In 2023, the Canton of Basel-Stadt welcomed 1 864 newborns, translating to a birth rate of 9.0 per 1,000 inhabitants. May saw the highest number of births with 185, while September had the least with 135. The newborns comprised 890 girls and 974 boys. Among them, 1 057 were Swiss and 723 were foreign, making the share of foreign newborns 38.8%, which is about the same as the foreign population share of 38.4%.

The average age of mothers in Basel-Stadt was 33.3 years, while fathers averaged 36.2 years. The youngest mother was 15, and the oldest was 47, with six teenage mothers recorded. Swiss mothers had an average age of 33.2 years, slightly younger than foreign mothers who averaged 33.4 years.

Comparing 2023 to 2005, total births increased from 1 678 to 1 864. The share of foreign babies decreased from 43.7% to 38.8%. Mothers' average age rose from 30.4 years in 2005 to 33.3 years in 2023. The number of teenage mothers significantly dropped from 33 in 2005 to just 6 in 2023.

In 2023, the most popular names for girls were Sofia (11), Sophia (10), and Elena (8). For boys, Noah (17), Samuel (12), and Elio (9) topped the list. Compared to 2006, these names represent new leaders. There were 164 new girls' names and 159 new boys' names introduced, including Lyna, Myla, and Aaditri for girls, and Boaz, Ridwan, and Yorin for boys.
