Ettingen is a municipality in the Bezirk Arlesheim, situated in the Leimen and Birsig valleys of the Basel-Landschaft canton. It lies at an altitude of 333 meters above sea level and covers a total area of 632 hectares. Table 2 summarizes the key features of the municipality, and figure 1 shows its location on the map.

The history of Ettingen stretches back to around 10,000 BC, with evidence of prehistoric human activity in the area. The current village developed in the 6th or 7th century along a stream, originally consisting of three farms known as the Oberhof, Mittelhof, and Niederhof. The village was named after its leader, Etto or Atto, from the Frankish or Alemannic tribe that established these farms. As of 2024, Ettingen has a population of 5,605, ranking it 19th in size among the 86 municipalities in the canton. The population consists of 4,479 Swiss citizens and 1,126 foreigners, meaning just over 20 percent of residents are foreign nationals.
